Complying With The Can-Spam Law

No Need To Read This
- Unless You Want To Avoid Federal Prosecution

From the desk of Timothy A. Gross

There are still some good folks accidentally sending out email to their newsletter subscribers that isn't Can-Spam compliant.

Whenever you're sending out any email to your subscribers, customers, or any other email lists that you keep in contact with, you need to:

  1. Include your company contact info at the bottom of the email (including a valid mailing address)

  2. Provide a simple unsubscribe method that is easy to follow

  3. Don't use misleading subject lines in your email

In addition, I'd suggest that you put a consistent identifyer in your email subject lines so it's easier for the recipient to know who it's from.

(For example, for my Internet Profit Report ezine, I usually start my subject lines with the word "iProfitReport" -and then the subject line.

Why? Because if you do a good job in providing value to your readers, it'll make it easier for them to recognize your messages that they want to read.

Some people say you can maximize your email readership by using subject lines like:

  • "Can you believe this?"
  • "Oops, I screwed up..."
  • "Could you do me a favor?"

The problem with that is if your readers don't recognize the "from" email address as being yours, and there's nothing in the subject line that lets them know it's from you, they may delete it without looking at it

- Even if they would have been interested in your message.

So I recommend you use an identifyer, then your headline, like:

  • "iProfitReport: Can you believe this?"
  • "iProfitReport: Oops, I screwed up..."
  • "iProfitReport: Could you do me a favor?"

The "curiosity factor" is still there, but hopefully I've established a bond with my readers so the "iProfitReport" identifyer will get the email opened more.

NOTE: It's easy to wind up with a virtually worthless subscriber list if you don't provide any value in your communications with them. If you don't think there's a benefit to identifying yourself in your email (meaning you think your subscribers would be more willing to open an "anonymous" email over one from you)... then you need to re-think your email communication strategy!!

To your success, Tim Gross
