I watched American Idol last night, and having been a professional musician for over 15 years, some contestants’ ideas about the process and how they evaluate themselves is truly bizarre.
There was a “rocker”-looking guy with lots of tattoos wearing a head band who worked an office job.
- He never took singing lessons
- He never learned how to play an instrument
- He never tried to start a band
- He never tried to collaborate with other musicians in any way
In other words, he never took any realistic step towards his goal, which he claims is a lifelong dream.
…And that’s the problem with “dreams”… Dreams are dreams, not possible reality.
He auditioned in Arizona, and it was 106 degrees outside. His final comment after being turned down for the show was this:
I mean I’m sweating to death, I’m wearing leather pants in Arizona, I mean, what else can a guy do?
Gee I don’t know, how about learning your craft? How about taking singing lessons?
Don’t get me wrong, I understand the allure of “leapfrogging” to the top, and it happens, but it’s like winning the lottery. Johnny Depp auditioned for his first movie without ever taking an acting lesson, for instance.
I know people who created successful Internet businesses on their first try with no previous business experience. They just happened to pick the right product, described it in a way that motivated people to buy it, and were successful almost immediately.
It happens, and it could happen to you. But you’d have to get very lucky, because the odds are you’ll have to try multiple things before stumbling on to something that works for you… That’s why it’s so important to get started actually doing something immediately. It’s the doing that matters.
Instead of depending on luck, a better way is to try to have instant success while also studying marketing, copywriting, what other people are doing online, and learning basic website creation skills.
I’ve got a lot of free video training available on InternetMarketingCourse.com, and by subscribing to my free e-newsletter there, you’ll get a lot of other tried-and-true information that will help you succeed quicker and less painfully… And if you’re already running a successful online business, that’s even better, because there are simple ways to increase your sales and profits.
Yes, you can get lucky and become an instant “star”, but as they say:
Luck = Opportunity + Preparedness
I occasionally get emails from people that say things like, “I work all day, and every night I go online for hours, clicking around looking for ways to make money online, but I haven’t found anything.”
…In other words, they haven’t actually created a plan and worked towards anything, they haven’t been learning new skills or getting experience with building an online business, they’re just wearing leather pants and a headband waiting for money to fall into their lap.
