I’m on an online marketer’s customer updates list, and he’s started sending out an email notifying his list every time he posts an update to his blog, which happens to be about twice a day.
The email sent out isn’t informative about what the post is about either, all it says is the title, “I just posted an article to my blog called I’m On A Plane”, with a link to his blog.
Well guess what – I don’t care that you’re on a plane. I’m a businessman with a lot on my mind, a lot to do, and a lot of email I need to filter out quickly to get down to business. If you’ve got an important update to tell me about as an existing customer, let me know. If you want to send me a weekly helpful summary of your blog posts with links to the full articles so I know whether it’s worth my time to click through and read them, great.
As it is, I can’t be on this guy’s customer updates list without essentially getting useless emails twice a day from him, so I’m unsubscribing. -And that means if he rolls out with some special offer in the future, I may not be aware of it to respond, which may lose him a sale.
Focus: Yes, it’s good to stay in contact frequently with your customers/subscribers so they remember who you are when you want to sell them something else, but don’t waste their time, and don’t abuse the privilege. Tim has spoken.
P.S. -If a friend of mine started calling me on my cell phone twice a day to say, “Tim, I just went potty!”, I’d start blocking his calls too… and possibly reevaluating our friendship.
