When you create video for a product, how long should your video clips be? Is one long clip better, or should I break it into sections? How long should the sections be?
I try to keep mine in segments of 5-7 minutes (although occasionally they accidentally run longer), for a couple reasons:
1) A mental break… Books have chapter for a reason, it gives people a chance to take a breather, know they’ve completed a section, etc, to avoid burnout with the material.
2) By giving each section an informative title, it helps the viewer find what they’re looking for without wasting time jumping through a 30+ minute video that doesn’t have sections labeled.
3) If you’re putting the videos online, it saves on bandwith. Why load a 60 MB video when the viewer may only watch the first 6 megs of it, when you can have them “load on demand” as interested viewers click on the next video.
PS – A hidden benefit of creating shorter sections is it forces YOU to be more concise as the video creator… You can’t waffle around for 30 minutes, you have to plan out each segment a little, which hopefully keeps you focused on presenting the information more clearly, which is a win-win.
