Herbie Hancock won a Grammy for “album of the year” for a jazz album. It always seemed crazy to to me to force different categories of music to compete for the same award.
The craziest example is the Emmy’s, which lump together Comedy and Singing in the same category, which lead to Barry Manilow and Stephen Colbert competing for the same award last year.
HOW TO YOU JUDGE THAT?
“Well gee… Barry sang better than Stephen, but Stephen was funnier than Barry, hmmm…”
It’s an overwhelming concept, and that type of dilemma infects entrepreneurs in getting started with their Internet businesses every day…
It’s easy to believe that you need to be good at everything before you even start:
Writing sales letters, mastering SEO (search engine optimization), understanding how to make money with Google Adwords, paid banners, free article placement, exchanging links, joint ventures, email marketing, blogging, design professional looking websites, setting up multiple scripts and software applications to process orders, understanding Social Networks, etc., etc.
The good news is you don’t have to be an expert in all of those things, you just need to be good at ONE thing.
Imagine if Foo Fighters, Vince Gill, Kanye West, and Amy Winehouse (the other artists competing for Album of the Year) had put their music careers on hold because they didn’t feel they were proficient enough at jazz (like Herbie Hancock) in order to get started.
That would be ridiculous.
Well if you’re hiding in the wings waiting to get all your ducks in a row before you roll out your business plan online, you’re being ridiculous as well. The ducks will never all be in a row, that’s not the nature of ducks.
Pick one thing, and just do it now. You won’t win a Grammy. But then again, you don’t have to.
