A friend bought a new laptop and called me today because it didn’t come bundled with the usual software tools (Microsoft Word, Excel, etc). So I told her about the free alternatives like Open Office, in case she didn’t want to plunk down the big bucks for the commercial versions.
If you need software, this list may save you a bundle. They’re free “open source” programs.
Microsoft Office Alternative: Open Office – Full-Featured alternative to Microsoft and Wordperfect… Its word processor can open/save in both MS Word and Wordperfect formats, it has an Excel-compatible spreadsheet program, and more. It will fill the needs of the vast majority of people.
Dreamweaver/Frontpage Alternatives: Nvu (pronounced M-View), or you can try Trellian (a similar free alternative)
FTP Program: Filezilla - VERY full-featured, I use it every day. There’s no reason to buy a commercial alternative.
Photoshop Alternative: GimpShop – I’ve used Photoshop from day one so never bothered with this program, but if you can’t afford Photoshop, free is good. (FYI, Paintshop Pro, a cheaper alternative to Photoshop, had gotten quite good as well last time I looked at it.
Internet Explorer Alternative: Firefox - I use Firefox 90% of the time. It has less security issues, and right-clicking links and selecting “open window in new tab” is a huge plus when browsing multiple pages.
This is by no means an exhaustive list, but they’re “biggies”. Hope you find them useful!
