As the sidekick for Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show, it was Ed McMahon’s job to laugh and react spontaneously to whatever was going on during the show.
In order to keep that spontaneity, he didn’t attend rehearsals.
After all, how could he spontaneously react to a joke, a skit, or a bit, if he’d already seen it during rehearsal?
I remember when I heard that for the first time, I thought, “Wow, that must be the best job ever!” (Hence the title of this post
)
Coincidentally, one of the things that I am very, very good at is being a fresh set of eyes to review sales letters, websites, etc.
You know how it’s really hard to catch your own spelling mistakes when you read back what you wrote? Catching marketing mistakes is the same thing. if you’re too close, sometimes you just can’t see them.
Make sure you have a fresh set of eyes read over what you’re doing. (Warning: Take whatever your family or friends say with some skepticism, they don’t want to upset you. Just because they say it “looks great” doesn’t mean anything.)
Or, if I’ve got the time have me do it. It’s what Ed McMahon and I are good at. That, and selling Alpo. (Actually, that’s more Ed’s thing. Am I dating myself with these references? Oh well.)
