Becoming More Dependent On Internet

I just got back from a vacation trip, and my hotel’s wireless Internet router was broken – So I essentially had no Internet access for several days. Blech.

From a business standpoint it didn’t really matter, I’m no longer involved in the day-to-day operations of my business, but it’s a strong reminder of the growing dependency of the Internet.

  • Email (of course!)
  • News (I no longer get a daily paper, scanning online news headlines is much more efficient)
  • Directions (Google Maps, Mapquest, etc)
  • Researching Products (I don’t make any big purchases without reading online customer reviews and ratings, checking reviews from ConsumerReviews.com, etc)
  • Travel Research (Reviewing customer feedback on hotels, restaurants, etc)
  • Entertainment (I’ve got a small number of “guilty pleasures” websites that I check regularly for updates, including some very lively discussion boards on a variety of topics of interest.

Not that this is a huge revelation or anything, but future reliance on the Internet will only increase, not decrease. And those who use Internet in general have better demographic profiles as consumers and potential customer than those who don’t.

Even if you own the tiniest local business, get it online.
