Futurama Creator Says “Short Window” For Series Renewal

By Tim Gross - Internet Business Blog | January 10, 2008

Futurama Bender’s Big Score

The very popular cartoon show “Futurama” was canceled a few years ago and now they’re back with new episodes this season. The co-creator of the series said if it were 5 years earlier or 5 years later, that it wouldn’t have happened. Here’s why:

There are two opposing forces at work caused by new technologies and consumer habits:

1) The popularity of buying DVD Season Sets (of Futurama) showed producers how much demand there is for Futurama, and they could also count on hard-core fans to buy the new episodes on DVD as well as watch them on TV for extra income.

2) The pirating and illegal downloading of media (music, video, software, etc) is taking a bite out of everyone’s sales and it’s on the rise, but it hasn’t increased enough yet to make it unprofitable to make new episodes.

It’s a perfect example of the changing times we’re in. We’re in the middle of a huge shakeup in the way we consume information, media, and news, and there were continue to be huge winners and losers.
