Creating An Online Business Built Around Musical Theater?

By Tim Gross - Internet Business Blog | April 12, 2007

I’ve heard it said that your online business should be centered around your passions and interests, but my passions and interests are in writing, specifically, playwriting and writing musical theatre writing. I also love watching broadway musicals. I love it so much that I recently started taking classes in playwriting and musical theatre writing. However, when I did my “market research” to see if there was anybody else interested in the topic (I looked at wordtracker to see how often playwriting and musical theatre writing popped up), I couldn’t find any! When I searched on Google, the only main sites I’ve saw was www.broadway.com and www.broadwayworld.com (two of my favorite sites), which deals mainly with upcoming musicals and how to get tickets. I’m not really interested in selling tickets. I’m interested in learning how to write for musical theatre. So, after all that, my question is, are there some “passions and interests” that you just can’t start an online business with? Should I just abandon my thought of starting an online business dealing with playwriting and musical theatre writing and continue on with my classes?

In your case, the most obvious benefit to having a presence online may be exposure in your industry. I’d suggest making an experiment of starting an online blog (this is a blog you’re reading) called “Learning How To Write For Musical Theater” or something, and try to make a post every 2 or 3 days at least regarding what you’re hoping to do, what you’re learning, etc.

You can interact with other related blogs which will build up traffic with other bloggers as some of them respond back to you, and possibly build useful contacts. An additional benefit is that being forced to write what you’re learning about helps to solidify it in your mind.

To see what blogs on musical theater exist, click on the Google “More” link, select “Blogs”, and search “musical theater”. Here’s the search results

You can start a free blog on Blogger.com or Wordpress. Note: This is a Wordpress blog you’re reading, but I installed the free software on my own server… YOu can get a free account that they host for you, and your URL will be something like writingformusicaltheater.wordpress.com (or whatever the title of your blog is).

A musician friend of mine created a website on Chicano Music: www.MarkGuerrero.net with no specific profit motive in mind… I helped him create his website originally and he really went to town on it. It’s become a real reference site on the subject, and he’s received unsolicited contacts and offers from musicians and music-industry folks, and it’s really expanded his circle of influence. It truly is his passion, and it all started from a simple website talking about what he loved.

I hope you find similar success! - Tim

PS - The second part of your question, “How do you establish credibility as a newbie?” can have the same answer. If you write an interesting, informative blog, you’re establishing credibility every time you write, and pretty soon you’re not perceived as a newbie at all.
