You Mean You’re Not Allowed To Lie In Your Ads???
By Tim Gross - Internet Business Blog | January 4, 2007
With all the unbelievable claims made on late-night commercials, you can get lulled into thinking that it’s OK to inflate and make unsubstantiated claims in advertising. Of course, you’d be wrong.
Diet schemes are one of the most easily abused (and most highly monitored) industries, and the FTC just dropped the hammer on TrimSpa, Cortislim, Xenadrine EFX, and (in a bigger surprise to me,) Bayer, for their One A Day Weight Smart product.
I learned MY lesson as a teenager… I was trying to park at a crowded beach in Santa Barbara, and dozens of cars were all parked on an adjoining street that had “No Parking” signs all over it. I figured everybody must know what they were doing, so I parked right alongside them.
Yep - Every single car had a ticket on it when I got back.
The FTC fines total $25 million in these cases, and some principal owners of the companies will have to sell houses and boats they purchased with profits to cover the fines.
It ain’t worth it, folks. Make sure all your advertising is in compliance, and be sure to have proper disclaimers in place as needed. Better safe than sorry. Sorry sucks.
