Happy New Year: Time Management Tips

By Tim Gross - Internet Business Blog |

This is my first “real” day doing some work in this new year, and it’s already late enough that some people have probably already given up on their New Years resolutions!

The reason why New Years resolutions tend to fail is that they’re artificially created excuses to let you NOT make changes in the months leading up to January 1st, as opposed to a real commitment to make changes.

A lot of resolutions have to do with being able to get more done.

Here are some tips:

* Make whatever you’re doing a game, and find ways to measure what you’re doing to try to beat your previous record, etc.

* Get a timer, and start using it to force yourself to do “pure” amounts of work time (under an hour). That means no phone calls, no surfing the net, no checking your mail, NOTHING, for that 45 minutes that you’ve designated as pure work.

* You’ll be amazed how much you can get done in short periods of time when you really commit to it 100%

* Use the timer to time yourself doing tasks in general.  If you’ve ever said, “Where did the day go?” at the end of the day (and everyone has), this is important: If you have tasks that you assume take 15 minutes but they actually take 45 minutes, you need to be aware of that, so you can a) find ways to do it quicker and b) make adjustments to your expectations so you can budget the rest of your time.

This may seem like a boring topic, but it’s one of the most crucial. What you have done at the end of the day, every day, decides everything.  Here’s to a great 2009.
