Job Security - NOT
By Tim Gross - Internet Business Blog | January 3, 2007
Growing up, my best friend and I had similar career plans: Both of our fathers worked for the same large electronics corporation, which provided good pay and lifetime job security for both of them.
My best friend went the “safe” route (so we thought) and after college got a job at the same company, while I became a “risk-taking” entrepreneur.
Fast-forward 15 years later, and my friend has gone through a buyout/closing of the company he worked for, after which he started working for two other large electronics firms - BOTH of which also closed their local branches. He’s recently been notified that his new employer may also close their doors in the coming year.
Meanwhile, I’ve got all the job security I’m willing to work for as the owner of my own business - Sure, I’ve got to keep a close eye on changes in my industry, stay ahead of the curve, etc., but it’s all in my control. And I like that.
At this point, it turns out that I took the safe bet after all. Go figure.
If you’re currently at the whim of outside forces, what can you do in this coming year to develop an outside source of income for yourself that you CAN control? There’s no better time to start than now.

I agree with you. I wrote about this same topic in a blog of mine earlier, and to sum up, I believe most people live in the myth of security that a job provides because they are too afraid to venture into the unknown, and until events happen that cause a dramatic shift in the way they think, it doesn’t change, and unfortunately, neither do they.
I think that is what is so addicting when you become an entrepreneur-you begin to see things as they really are, and then seek to create new realities within that based upon your dreams. In that process are gained the knowledge, tools, and direction needed to succeed, and you start to feel alive because of the dynamic nature of this creative process.
Living vs. Stagnation-Thanks, Tim. I wrote a blog entry about this on my site, and included a link to your blog.
Have a Great Day!
