New Study Shows How Visitors View Your Website
By Tim Gross - Internet Business Blog | September 20, 2008
According to a recent study, here’s how visitors read your web content and online sales letters:
“In the eye-tracking test, only one in six subjects read Web pages linearly, sentence by sentence. The rest jumped around chasing keywords, bullet points, visuals, and color and typeface variations. In another experiment on how people read e-newsletters, informational e-mail messages, and news feeds, Nielsen exclaimed, “‘Reading’ is not even the right word.” The subjects usually read only the first two words in headlines, and they ignored the introductory sections. They wanted the “nut” and nothing else.”
…That’s why it’s so crucial to break up your sales letters and content with:
- Headlines
- Sub-Headlines
- Bullet Points
- Bold font to make important points stand out
- Graphics (when appropriate)
- Arrows point to important content
- Adding a P.S. or summation statement at the end
…Don’t assume people are reading what you’re giving them. You’ve got to spoonfeed them nuggets of info you want them to have…
Pretend you’re teaching a kindergarten class and have to keep doing interesting things to keep your students’ attention. (Because you do!) ![]()
