How Important Is A Title/Headline? IMPORTANT!
By Tim Gross - Internet Business Blog | December 11, 2006
I’ve been a student of Direct Response Marketing for a long time now, and one of the first credible teachers I found close to 20 years ago was Melvin Powers, author of “How To Get Rich In Mail Order” and “How To Self-Publish Your Book“.
Mr. Powers routinely turned unpopular books into good sellers doing nothing but changing the title of the book.
(You might want to let that sink in…)
He made a pretty astounding claim: That he could tell you in advance whether or not your book would be successful based solely on the title.
-And he welcomed his readers to call his office and get his opinion on their book title! Well, I nervously called his office one day, not really expecting to talk to him, but I got patched right through.
At the time, I was writing a comedy book, not something that fit his usual “How To” publishing titles, but I told him the title of the book.
“Nope“, he said, “It won’t sell.”
I tried to explain why I’d chosen the title, that it was comedy, not a “how-to” book, but he stuck to his statement. -And he was right.
Can The Name Of Your Product Or Your Store
Literally Make Or Break Your Business???
Yes, it’s possible… I routinely drive by stores that don’t say what they’re selling. Based on the name, they might be a clothing store, or maybe a fitness gym, I don’t know - and I’m not stopping to find out.
Your book title, product name, the name of your store, they’re all essentially Headlines. Don’t take those decisions lightly.
