It’s OK To Be A Lemming (The Shocking Truth!)
By Tim Gross - Internet Business Blog | April 10, 2008
I just finished hearing yet another business adviser saying not to run your business like a Lemming.
You know about Lemmings, right? They’re so stupid that they commit mass suicide by following the Lemmings in front of them as they all kill themselves by jumping off a cliff.
So how could I possibly tell you that it’s OK to be a Lemming?!!!!
Easy. -Because the Lemming story is a complete fabrication.
It’s A Lie
It’s a myth created by a 1958 Disney movie called White Wilderness… The filmmakers imported lemmings, and forced them to fall off a ledge to film the supposed “mass suicide”.
The truth is, Lemmings do their best to survive and thrive, and when their population gets too large, they try to spread out into unfamiliar territory and sometimes die due to standard typical misfortunes of small rodents on dangerous new ground.
So, yes: When there’s too much competition where your business is looking for new customers, I highly recommend doing what Lemmings do, and set off in search of new fortunes (being as careful as possible, of course).
What Basic Assumptions Do You Have That May Be Wrong?
If business gurus tell you not be like a Lemming… But they’re wrong about the basic nature of Lemmings themselves, what else have you swallowed as fact that may be incorrect?
If the most basic unchallenged assumptions about your business model are actually wrong, it won’t matter how much tweaking and adjusting you make with your strategies and tactics.
So: Don’t be like the myth Lemmings… The kind that follow others blindly to their deaths.
DO be like the REAL Lemmings… Who go looking for more fertile ground when the competition is too strong on their home turf.
What basic assumptions haven’t you challenged?
PS: Here are some good-hearted folks who used “Lemmings” in a derogatory way to describe Internet Marketing trends, but us true lemmings won’t take it personally, heh:
