Jerkin’ Around Your Subscriber List

Balancing Those Two Elements Can Be Harder Than It Looks

Here’s an email I received recently for being on a marketer’s buyer’s list:

Subject: here’s a special ‘thank you’ for (buying my product)

I wanted to ‘Thank You’ for (buying my product)
So, I want to give you $100…
I am offering (other product offer) and I took $100 off for you!

Wow, you must like me a LOT to give me $100 !!!!

Or, wait… Oh, you’re trying to get me to buy something.

That’s kind of like calling up your friend and saying, “As a thank you for being my friend, I’m only going to ask you to shovel two thirds of the snow off my driveway instead of the whole thing!

To which your friend replies, “Dude… shovel your own driveway - AND DON’T CALL ME AGAIN”

Don’t get me wrong, you should absolutely make special discounted offers to your buyers lists, and you can stress that it’s a special deal for buyers only, for “best customers” only, etc., and that’s completely legitimate.

But as a “thank you”? -That’s disingenuous.

Make strong offers to your list -  But keep your credibility intact.
